A few weeks ago I signed up to play intramural softball. It rained cats and dogs during the night of our first game and after playing for half an hour we called it quits. I did not know that intramural softball was slow-pitch. I have never played slow-pitch softball before, so when I was called out on illegal pitches, I was really mad, but at least I was able to make new friends. Of course it was nice actually being able to play again after two years off. What made playing difficult was not only the different rules but my bad knee as well. It has bothered me every softball season for five years and even when I was not playing it would hurt. When I went for my physical, the doctor said I had a weak ligament that was causing the bone to move in and out of the joint. Luckily, he gave me a prescription knee brace that I have to wear for softball games and it works great! It does get a little hot from time to time but it provides the support my knee needs to stay in place. If not for that brace I could have torn that ligament during a game and would have to get surgery to repair it. Anyway, the softball team works great together and everyone gets along fine with each other, which is good seeing as the last few years of softball I played was on teams who had people that were filled with hatred for one another. The season ended last week and I would sign up again next when given the chance.

The moral code of one society has no “special status”, but is one moral code among many is a correct claim for a Cultural Relativist to make. This idea somewhat influences Americans’ attitudes toward the poor in other countries. I say this because there are people who make it their life’s work to help the poor while others would not. Apathy is an inevitable consequence of this thesis.

The people who are for immigration often associate the immigrants, legal or not, with Jesus for he was an immigrant as well. Penalver describes the striking similarities between todays immigrants and the “squatters” of 19^th century America. Those who are against immigration say that immigrants are an unfair burden on taxpayers because they tend to use welfare and if they are illegal do not pay taxes. They also argue that immigrants put a strain on our country’s resources, promote linguistic isolation by residing in predominantly spanish-speaking neighborhoods, and cause our country to be grossly overpopulated. I am in the middle on this debate for the pros and the cons tend to balance each other out.

Having ICT readily available to the public can yield the benefits of improved education, government, and health care as well as be a multiplying factor for social inclusion. Having access to these tools can result in a well-off economy due to being able to access online sites for purchasing objects and for business men to communicate from far away. On the other hand, not having access to some or any ICT can result in a less than satisfactory economy because of the inability to communicate sales quickly and effectively. Some might not have full use of these tools due to obstruction of the physical, financial, cognitive, design, content, production, institutional, or political access points. The two types of access are formal and effective access.

I always thought the first half of my beginning semester at any college would be a huge challenge. It was actually an easy transition at FSC. The workload is definitely different from high school, but its not too different from what I was assigned in my AP classes. I am really glad I took them now. The biggest challenge was the workload in my art classes. The work keeps me up into the wee hours of the morning, but they are fun and the silence around the house at 3 am is a pleasant change from during the day. If anything has surprised me the most, it would be the personalities of the professors and staff around campus. They are all wonderful to be around and they are unique in a good way. I really enjoy not having to do work during classes, aka classwork, and the breaks I get in between the classes, although they tend to last a little too long sometimes. I least like the huge bag of art supplies I have to carry around with me everyday, it has a huge drawing board in it and feels like it weighs a ton. Outside of classes I spend time with my friends in the J.R.B. And we play a lot of ping-pong and pool. If I could change anything in the past 8 weeks it would be to study more for my tests and go to more of the events on campus to meet people. Other than that I am happy to be here.

I do not usually read critically, but I tend to focus on certain areas of articles that are given to me instead of the whole article. I do highlight information that is important to me and sometimes I write small notes, like words I do not know or statistics, in the margins, but it never occurs to me who the audience is or what the author’s tone is. When I read an article the voice in my head tends to be very monotone and neutral (if that makes any sense) which makes finding the author’s tone and audience very difficult for me. I have always read articles in this manner and, as a result, I tend to not do well on tests because of it unless I am given a study guide with questions that span the entire article. However, I do not expect the teacher or professor to take time out their day to make these questions so I make do with how I was taught to read. When I highlight, I usually highlight numbers and statistics, as well as phrases that have small meaning to me, but may be important to the argument the author is giving. Highlighting and making notes does make the article, as a whole, seem more structured and makes it a little easier to read the next time. The highlighting makes the article easier to study before class as well. Over the next week I would like to really go over tone and audience because I can not seem to grasp the concept no matter how hard I try to.

Art Opening Co-curricular Blog

On Friday I went to my first Art Opening of the year. The Exhibition was held in the Melvin Art Gallery and had the works of Contemporary Spanish realist painter Félix de la Concha. The exhibition is entitled “Fallingwater en Perspectiva” and featured Concha’s interpretations one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s houses called Fallingwater. Conch lived in Fallingwater for a year and records the house in his oil paintings from different angles at different times of the year. One of his works includes the entire inside of the main room in a succession of around ten paintings. I saw that each of his works include close detail and shows the slightest change in light and shadow, even the cloud patterns change subtly. I had never been to an art opening before and I had expected it to be quiet, but there was live music playing and there was a normal level noise throughout the room and there was even food, like sandwiches, fruit, cheese and ginger ale. The funny thing my friends and I noticed were that the only people who attended were art students and older people as well as the artist himself and the art professors. All the art students are required to attend art openings, but it was not a horrible experience, it was actually quite fun. The exhibit is open until November 10^th. The next art opening is the Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Show so I have to attend that so I can show my work to the campus.

Slumdog Millionaire Co-curricular Blog

About two weeks ago I saw “Slumdog Millionaire” in the Thrift Center. It was a really good movie considering it only took 15 million dollars to make it. It tells the story of Jamal K. Malik and his brother, Salim, through his questions and the answers he gives in “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?”. He is accused of cheating when he is on his last question and taken to the police for interrogation. We learn of his first-hand experiences and the horror and tortures he and his brother go through as well as Malik’s never-ending struggle to find a girl he became friends with, Latika, for most of his young life. I learned a lot about the society of India’s slums and the hardships the people, who live there, go through. I had never seen this movie before and I went with a few friends so it was interesting and we talked about the movie afterward. I liked watching the movie at the college, so I plan to go again when the next movie is played. After watching this movie, it made me think about the world outside of my home and the United States. The movie makes you see the harsh ways of making money in India, from pick-pocketing and conning tourists to burning the eyes of a young boy because blind singers make double of those who can see when they beg. Sometimes it takes seeing the more difficult events to watch to initiate action amongst the population.

I have been very busy the past two days. Friday night I had to go to the grocery store with my mother because we were going to Universal Studios with my grandma, brother, and my two cousins. We did not spend too much time there because we had to hurry home and pack the little bags. I went to sleep early that night and woke up about 7:45 the next morning to get dressed and feed my animals as well as eat breakfast myself. It was a really hectic morning and my grandma and cousins did not make it to the house until 8:15 and we finally left around 8:30. The trip there took one hour, but there was a lot of traffic to get into the park and we waited another hour just to park. By the time we made into the actual park, it was about 11:00. We rode rides that everyone could ride so we did not waste time waiting for others until we made it to the rollercoasters that had single-rider lines. The wait time for the coasters would be 35 – 45 minutes, but the single-rider lines let you skip the normal line and you can ride the ride in close to 10 minutes. The only downside is that you could be seperated from your group and you have to wait for them when you get off. I think the pros definitely outway the cons. We did not make it home until 10:45 that night. Everyone slept in late the next morning and I did not get up until 10:00. Sunday is always the “lazy day” in my house. My mom would do a little cleaning and I do homework.

There are several ways I use ICT’s and information in my life. I use most of the social networks known to the common public like Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter. What’s funny to me is that I became a member of Myspace and Facebook before it was cool to have an account on either of these sites and I really don’t check them too often since they became popular except to keep in contact with friends. I’m also a member of lesser known social networks like Gaia and Tokidoki Journal. Both of these sites are unique in that Gaia is almost like a game with chatroom avatars being actual little people you can create and buy clothing for; and Tokidoki Journal being a site with art tools similar to Photoshop so you can create pictures right on the site with an automatic playback button to show how you made your picture to the people who visit your profile. I just bacame a member of Twitter so I really don’t know much about it yet except that member’s profiles can be updated almost instantly from anywhere. I have to say though that instant messaging from a cellphone is one of the best additions a cellphone could get other than text messaging. I don’t have internet on my phone so having IM is pretty cool for me. I talk with most of my friends through e-mail because it’s easier than calling and can be checked from any place that has access to the internet.
